Russian Sociological Society named after M. M. Kovalevsky.
The Sociological Society named after M. M. Kovalevsky is a voluntary public organisation of sociologists and representatives of other social sciences. The Society’s goal is to work out and share social knowledge, laws of social structure and social development. The Society strives to consolidate knowledge accumulated by various social-oriented disciplines. It is open to diverse approaches and techniques of social research and is aimed at the mutual enrichment of Russian and foreign
sociological traditions.
The Society was founded in 1916 and named after one of its originators, a leading Russian sociologist M. M. Kovalevsky. Among the organisers and first
members of the Society were such world-class scholars as: I. P. Pavlov,
physiologist and Nobel Prize laureate; V. M. Bekhterev, psychologist; P. A.
Sorokin, sociologist; A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky and N. I. Kareev, historians; M.
I. Tugan-Baranovsky and N. D. Kondratyev, economists; L. I. Petrazhitsky, legal
scholar. By the year 1923, the society's activities had ceased but, 70 years
later, it was restored in the new historical conditions.
