Doctoral Programs

 
Saint-Petersburg State University provides postgraduate and doctoral education on a budgetary (state-financed) and contractual (fee-paying) basis. Foreign applicants (including citizens of the CIS countries) are admitted to doctoral and postgraduate education programs as well as unenrolled postgraduate and doctoral studies on the basis of international contracts and agreements, as well as contracts concluded with institutions of higher education and academic institutions of the Russian Federation.

Stateless persons are admitted to doctoral and postgraduate education programs including unenrolled postgraduate and doctoral studies according to the standard procedure provided that they have a document certifying the legality of their residence in the Russian Federation. Admission to doctoral and postgraduate education programs is possible due to the admission quotas assigned by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, on the basis of agreements, and within the frameworks of research and technical programs.

Doctoral and postgraduate students as well as unenrolled ones are entitled to make free use of laboratories, equipment, offices, and libraries. Doctoral students and full-time postgraduate students enjoy the benefits provided for in the legislation of the Russian Federation, are provided with dormitory accommodation and fellowships. Full-time postgraduate students enjoy the right of draft deferment for the entire term of their studies.

Postgraduate students can take part in competitions for state and other personal fellowships. Candidates are approved at a session of the Academic Council of Saint-Petersburg State University upon the recommendation of the faculties thereof.

The qualifying examinations for the Candidate's degree for enrolled and unenrolled postgraduate students are held twice a year, from May 15 till June 15 and from October 15 till November 15.


Postgraduate Programs
Admission to postgraduate programs is held on a competitive basis for persons with a higher professional education.

Documents:
  • application, addressed to the Rector;
  • copy of a state-recognised diploma of higher professional education with an academic transcript (or, for foreign applicants, a certificate of the equivalence of their documents of education);
  • application form;
  • list of published research papers and inventions;
  • certificates on passing the qualifying examinations for the Candidate’s degree. The passport and the diploma are presented by the applicant in person.

The admission registration takes place annually, from June 1 till August 31. Applicants for postgraduate programs are required to have an interview with their intended academic advisor.

The entrance examinations are held annually, during the first ten days of September, in the following disciplines:
  • subject of specialisation in accordance with the national standards of higher professional education;
  • Foreign Language;
  • Philosophy.
Enrollment is in effect starting from October 1. Enrollment to the Faculty of Physics is in effect starting from June 25; admission to the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science is in effect starting from December 25.

The results of postgraduate entrance examinations are valid for the period of one calendar year.

The final Master’s examinations are considered as postgraduate entrance examinations provided that the Master's individual plan involved Master’s examinations in a Foreign Language and in Philosophy.

The duration of full-time postgraduate education is three years; the duration of part-time postgraduate education is four years.

Postgraduates have their term of full-time postgraduate studies considered as part of their record of academic teaching and research work.

Doctoral Programs
 

Admission to doctoral programs is held for persons with the degree of Candidate of Science.

Documents:
  • application, addressed to the Rector;
  • copy of the diploma awarding the academic degree of Candidate of Science (or, for foreign applicants, certificates of the equivalence of their diplomas);
  • application form;
  • detailed plan for the development of the doctoral dissertation;
  • list of published research papers and inventions. The passport and diploma are presented by the applicant in person. The Rector decides on admission on the basis of the recommendation of the Department and Academic Council of the Faculty.
The term of doctoral studies is considered as part of the record of academic teaching and research work.
The duration of programs is three years.

Unenrolled Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies
The academic degree of Candidate of Science can be applied for by persons with a higher professional education. Unenrolled postgraduate students can be assigned to the University for a term not exceeding two years for the purpose of passing the qualifying examinations for the Candidate's degree and for a term not exceeding three years for the purpose of dissertation development. The total duration for the assignment of an unenrolled postgraduate student does not exceed five years. The academic degree of Doctor of Science can be applied for by persons with the academic degree of Candidate of Science. The term of assignment of unenrolled doctoral students for the purpose of doctoral dissertation development does not exceed four years.

  • certificate on passing the qualifying examinations for the Candidate's degree. The passport and diploma are presented by the applicant in person. The Rector issues an order concerning the assignment of an applicant for the academic degree of Candidate of Science and appointment of the academic advisor on the basis of the results of the applicant's interview with his/her intended academic advisor and the decision drawn by the Department. The order concerning the enrollment of an applicant for the academic degree of a Doctor of Science and the appointment of the academic advisor is issued on the basis of the decision made by the Academic Council of the Faculty.

Enrollment takes place annually starting from March 15.

The applicants enrolled:
  • within a period of three months must submit their individual research plan, approved by their academic advisor, for the approval of the Department. The individual plan and dissertation subject must be approved by the Academic Council of the Faculty;
  • take the qualifying examinations for the Candidate's degree in Philosophy, Foreign Language and a specialty at the institution of assignment;
  • make regular reports and undergo annual assessment;
  • those unable to perform the individual research plan are subject to expulsion.
